Safety and Regulatory
An operator’s number one commitment to its customers is safety. Safety is controlled through both regulatory bodies and each organizations internal practices. This session will touch on top-of-mind safety and regulatory topics and include Interferry’s official regulatory update.
Javier Herbon of CBG Systems will present a light-weight passive fire-protection alternative. With automation and autonomy increasing in popularity, Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Rob Maher will discuss performance-based regulation of autonomous maritime systems.
Interferry’s Director of Regulatory Affairs Johan Roos will close out the session with Interferry’s official regulatory update covering outcomes from 2023 IMO sessions and OPC meetings, as well an update on Interferry’s domestic ferry safety efforts.
The presentations will be followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

Reducing Environmental Impact
Operators are constantly having to look at ways to lessen their environmental impact, reduce their carbon footprint and become more sustainable. This session aims to provide some starting points and take-aways that operators can begin to implement immediately.
Rodney Humphrey of DNV will review the impact of “going slow” for emission reductions in relation to HSC Code. Kok Ken Chin of RINA will share a framework for assessing the life cycle impact of a vessel.
A 15-minute Q&A session will follow.

Improving Sustainability in Existing Vessels
With increasingly demanding regulations facing operators, new ships with new technologies are being scheduled to be built in the coming years to reach targets. While many old vessels will be retired to welcome new ones, there are still many existing vessels with an abundance of useful life that will be rendered inoperable under coming regulations unless they can be retrofitted for efficiency.
Operators must also look to the exterior maintenance of their ships when assessing their sustainability which is why this session will explore the importance of effective bio-fouling maintenance.
The first part of this session will focus on solutions for retrofitting old vessels to give them new life. Jan-Willem Vissers of Volvo Penta will present a case study of giving elderly ferry tonnage and new and useful life, and Sander van Oosterhout of Wärstilä will share energy saving applications for existing vessels.
The second half of the session will dive into effective bio-fouling management. Trevor Tasker of EMCS and Dr. Ashley Coutts of Biofouling Solutions Ltd will explore how sustainability can be elevated through proactive maintenance and biofouling management. Tom Loefler from Hullbot will share how autonomous hull-cleaning technology can maximize efficiency and lower emissions.
A 15 minute Q&A session will follow.

Optimizing Operations and Safety
As the discussion around decarbonization continues to be in the spotlight, it is important that operators do not lose sight of safety and operational efficiency targets. In a day and age where data is becoming increasingly available, operators must look at ways to best analyze and utilize this information to make strategic decisions.
In this session, Tuomas Häkkinen of NAPA will discuss how operators can optimize operations and safety while meeting decarbonization targets through the efficient use of operational data.
