MONA and Botanical Gardens

MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is Australia’s largest private museum located within the Moorilla winery near Hobart, Tasmania. The unique and provocative collection consisting of three floors of subterranean architecture, antiquities, art pieces and exhibits is a key attraction in the state. You will take the 25-minute ferry journey and have exclusive access to the ‘posh pit’ which offers drinks, tiny food and private lounge and deck. You can navigate the museum via the “O” app which can be downloaded to smartphones and provides information on the artworks.

Enjoy the artwork, architecture and grounds before taking a coach to lunch at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

The Botanical Gardens is a 14 hectare, cool climate garden with several unique collections including Australia’s only subantarctic plant house. Following a 2-course lunch and drinks at the garden’s Succulent Restaurant, you will enjoy a 50-minute walking tour that takes in the highlights and gives insights into conservation work.

You will return home via coach to the Hotel Grand Chancellor.

NOTE: There are 99 steps upon arrival at MONA, however there is an accessible entrance via tunnel if required.

Richmond, Bonorong Wildlife Santuary and Puddleduck Vineyard

On the Coal River sits the colonial-era village of Richmond which oozes photogenic history and holds many a convict tale. You will have an opportunity to explore Australia’s oldest bridge, oldest surviving Catholic church and goal; and visit shops, cafes and galleries that occupy restored Georgian era buildings.

A short drive away is Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, home to rescued Australian wildlife such as Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and much more. The guided tour provides insights about the rescued inhabitants and guests can try their hand at feeding one of the friendly kangaroos who enjoy a good scratch on the chest.

Puddleduck Vineyard is a friendly, boutique family-owned vineyard and winery established in 1997. Overlooking a pond with puddling ducks, you can explore the grounds, have a tasting of cool climate wines including riesling, pinot noir, sparkling and chardonnay, before a relaxed 2-course lunch with drinks, tea and coffee.
